Zebra Mussels Are Here To Stay in Black Lake
|
Zebra Mussels were first detected in Black Lake in 2003. Since that
time our lake has become less "black" and noticably clearer.
However, sport fishing on Black Lake is increasingly threatened,
especially for Walleye. Click here for story.
The Alverno Fire Department, which provides fire protection for
all of Grant, Benton and Aloha Townships, has recently
completed the necessary training and successfully tested to
receive a new ISO rating of 7. Previously our volunteer fire
department had a rating of 9. This is a remarkable achievement
for our firefighters and their chief. Furthermore, it means your
homeowners insurance premiums should go down!
Contact your insurance company and ask for a review of your
policy in light of this change.
Dumpster Days are May 18th and 19th!! Start gathering up your trash!!!

POVERTY EXEMPTION INFORMATION

Property tax is unique in that it is the only system of taxation that provides for an annual
appeals process. Taxpayers have an opportunity to appeal the burden of property taxes
in an attempt to reduce their tax bill before it is due. No other method of taxation can
make that statement.
The Board of Review
The first step in that process is an appeal of the assessment to the board of review. A
property owner may appear before the board during the meeting for one or more of the
following reasons:
- Taxes are too high
- To claim a hardship
- Tentative taxable value is too high
- Valuations are correct, but are higher than other property in the neighborhood or
other property similar to the taxpayer's property
- The property shouldn't be assessed at all
- The taxpayer is not really protesting the assessment, but just checking on what
the current valuation is
- The assessor has the wrong classification on the property
The Grant Township Property Tax Board of Review is scheduled for Tuesday, March 12,
2012 from 3 P.M. until 9 P.M. and again on March 13, 2012 from 9 A.M. until 3 P.M. You
do not need to be present to appeal your taxes. You may submit your claim PLUS
documentation/evidence by U.S. Mail or e-mail. You must submit a completed form
L-4035 with your request. To download a copy of Form L-4035, click here: www.
michigan.gov. Once there, enter L-4035 in the space labeled "enter search terms here"
and hit go. The fourth paragraph down is form L-4035.

Cannon Boom Ends Two Hour 2012 Sturgeon Season
|
Ed Crawford of Afton and Lance Williams of Cheboygan were the lucky fishermen to
go home with sturgeon from the 2012 spearing season on Black Lake. Ed's fish was
58.7" long and weighed 45.4 lbs. Lance's was 53.5" and 32 lbs.
Although the quota for this year was 7 fish, the same as last year, the decision was
made to close the season after two fish were harvested. Last year 11 fish were
harvested due to the delay between the 7th fish caught and getting the word out to the
rest of the fishermen. The cannon boom this year, and more DNR officers on the ice,
had most of the fishermen aware of the season's close within about 3 minutes.
